A Tattoo Causing “Negative Energy"?

According to sources, this is how Megan Fox felt about her Marilyn Monroe tattoo on her right forearm. Fox felt so strongly about it, that she underwent the process to have it removed via laser treatment. In an interview with an Italian magazine, she said she is having it done because, "[Marilyn Monroe] is a negative character, as she suffered from personality disorders and was bipolar. I do not want to attract this kind of negative energy in my life.” Monroe infamously died from a drug overdose in 1962 at the age of 36.

With the 2011-2012 NBA season finally underway, the Chicago Bulls are once again one of the favorites to raise the Larry O’Brien Trophy in June. After an impressive last second victory in Los Angeles on Christmas day, the expectations are high for last season’s Eastern Conference number one seed. If you happened to watch that game on Sunday you may have noticed one difference in this year’s Bulls, aside from the addition of Richard Hamilton, and that is Carlos Boozer’s hair.

Since entering the league in 2002, Boozer has been suffering from a receding hairline. He regularly kept his hairstyle closely shaven, so it was usually rather difficult to notice. Now however, it is quite obvious he has a brand new hairline. This has led to speculation that Boozer may have had a hair transplant in the (longer than usual) off-season.

Ryan Reynolds in the 2011 film, Buried.

Actor Ryan Reynolds rose to fame in the late 1990s with the sitcom, Two Guys and a Girl. Since that time he has become one of the most popular leading men in Hollywood, with roles in such movies as Van Wilder, X -Men Origins: Wolverine, and Green Lantern.

A recent role however in the Rodrigo Cortés directed thriller, Buried, took quite a toll on the actor physically. Reynolds reveals he came away from the part with some bumps, bruises, and even experienced some hair loss. The film centers around an American truck driver (Ryan Reynolds) based in Iraq, who awakens buried alive in a coffin, armed only with a lighter and a cell phone. Due to most of the filming being done with Reynolds inside the claustrophobic quarters of a coffin, the actor experienced bleeding, loss of skin, and even a loss of hair on the back of his scalp.

His hair loss can be attributed to a lack of circulation his scalp received due to lying on a hard surface for a prolonged length of time. This type of hair loss is similar to Traction Alopecia and is usually temporary. Also, since the head is an area of the body that receives good circulation, the better chance it will grow back.

· Limit your time in the shower

· Bathe in warm water rather than hot (hot water can actually strip your skin of moisture)

· Use a body wash instead of bar soap (bar soap can often be harsh on skin)

· After showering or bathing pat yourself dry, don't rub

· Apply a moisturizer when your skin is still moist (Here at Neiman Dermatology we recommend CeraVe or Cetaphil®)

· Apply sunscreen to exposed areas of skin because even if it's not sunny out, harmful UVA rays are still prevalent.

· Drink lots of water and other fluids because the cold weather can take away necessary moisture to the skin.

Topical Steroid Addiction

Topical steroids are corticosteroids that promote anti-inflammatory responses by suppressing the immune system’s response, and are usually prescribed for dermatitis, eczema, or rashes.

Due to the effective results treatment can yield, patients can potentially develop a dependency on them. The initial side effect is when you stop the topical steroid, the rash comes back with a vengeance. So quite often, people will continue to apply the steroid even after the rash clears, and in doing so, severe side effects can arise from this. Examples of such side effects would include: Atrophy of the skin (the consistency in the area of skin where the cream was used becomes comparable to saran wrap) or striae (thick red lines that look like stretch marks). An effective way to avoid addiction is through the use of a stagger program. An example of this is using the topical steroid twice a day for two weeks, then taking one week off.

Topical steroids are a powerful prescription that if not administered properly can become a very serious issue.

In this photo the glabellar area (or sometimes

Contact Dermatitis

Contact dermatitis is a common skin condition that occurs from exposure to a substance that irritates the skin. The thereafter effects are represented by redness and inflammation. This may be caused by certain soaps, deodorants, jewelry or even some plants.

The most infamous form of the condition stems from contact with Poison Ivy. Poison Ivy is a plant that secretes oil, which upon contact with the skin causes irritation leaving behind a rash. Although the rash is extremely uncomfortable, itching or scratching the infected area will cause the condition to worsen. Not only will the inflammation further increase, but it may also lead to scarring and darkening of the skin (post inflammatory hyperpigmentation). Within the first few days of contraction, the treatment methods tend to be more effective and efficient. For periods beyond that time, such as a week or two, options may include a topical steroid.

The most successful treatment options when dealing with any form of contact dermatitis include identifying what causes the reaction, avoiding it (if possible), and taking the corrective steps and it should improve within a few weeks. Although this condition can become quite serious it is not life-threatening, nor contagious. If you believe you may be experiencing contact dermatititis contact your dermatologist immediately.

Charlie Sheen Not "Winning" the Fight Against Male Pattern Baldness

With the fall season upon us it signals the change of leaves, weather, and most notably to some, the beginning of the new TV season. With many anticipated premieres across the board, Two and a Half Men is by far receiving the most attention. The popular CBS sitcom is undergoing drastic changes after the show’s main star, Charlie Sheen was let go from his contract last spring. The incident that led to his dismissal began with a strange incident at the Plaza hotel in New York City. What followed could only be described as a public meltdown of epic proportions. From various media appearances where he admitted to excessive drug use, to trashing the show’s co-creator/executive producer Chuck Lorre, Sheen paved the way for his exit.

Aside from Sheen losing his job he might be on the verge of losing something else, and that is his hair. Photos from 2010 show the controversial star with a shaved head showing signs of deep recession in the temple area. Since then his hair has noticeably thickened, which has led some to believe he may even be wearing a wig. Sheen’s prior drug use may not have helped matters with his hair either. Drug use has been known to be a key factor in causing hair loss. Supposedly, his drug use has already caused him to lose all of his teeth, having them replaced with porcelain veneers.

As for his hair, he still has hope with options like Propecia or Rogaine. Those options though could take up to six months to notice hair growth, if there is any. A hair transplant would be a more definite solution because unlike Propecia or Rogaine, hair transplants typically work for everyone. Who knows what Charlie Sheen’s next step will be in his fight against hair loss, but if it’s like anything we've seen from him lately I’m sure it will be an interesting one.

Eczema

Eczema is an autoimmune disease that starts out rather itchy (progressively becoming worse), thereafter developing into a rash. The rash tends to be very dry and scaly in appearance, but is not contagious.

Eczema can arise at any age, but is most prevalent in infants and young adults. Affecting nearly 15 percent of people worldwide, it was recently reported that it is on the rise as the biggest skin disease for children nowadays. In older sufferers, eczema typically occurs on the hands or feet, but may appear anywhere on the body. Certain foods, allergens, or bacteria have been known to all be contributors to the condition.

There may be no cure for eczema, but understanding certain irritants is quite crucial in prevention or reoccurrence. If you believe you may be experiencing eczema contact your dermatologist today. The earlier treatment is made, the more manageable the condition.

With what would have been Michael Jackson’s 53^rd birthday occurring this past Monday, August 29^th, many throughout the world celebrated the legacy of the “King of Pop.” Jackson was a transcendent, entertainment icon whose incredible talent and mysterious persona made him a popular figure within the media.

Although he may have been most well known for his music, his constantly evolving skin tone seemed to garner almost as much attention. According to Jackson, in a 1993 interview with Oprah Winfrey, his changing skin tone was attributed to a condition called vitiligo. Vitiligo is very rare skin disorder (effecting less than 2% of the population) that causes de-pigmentation of areas of the skin. This occurs when cells responsible for skin pigmentation (melanocytes) die or are unable to function properly. Although the cause is unknown, some believe it can be linked to genetics or stress. It is typically a progressive condition that can arise at any age, usually developing small in size.

With Jackson, the condition first appeared in the early 1980s, and according to a longtime friend, he started wearing his signature sequin glove on his right hand to cover early signs of the condition. In the years following, he received much criticism and ridicule for his evolving skin tone. This is something that is relatively common to experience for those who suffer from vitiligo, due to society’s lack of understanding about the condition. This can in turn lead to serious psychological effects, causing sufferers to take desperate measures to hide their symptoms. Although the condition effects all skin tones and types, it is more noticeable the darker the skin.

Currently there is no cure for vitiligo, but there are many different treatment options available, talk to your dermatologist today if you believe you may have vitiligo.

Don't Stress about Acne

Acne is a common skin condition that typically effects teens. It is mainly characterized by pimples, blackheads, or whiteheads residing on the face, chest, or back.

Aside from the physical elements of the condition, it can actually have just as much of an impact psychologically. Some who experience acne can develop low self-esteem and even depression.

Although it is unclear exactly what may cause acne; stress, diet (salty foods and dairy), and hormones can all be contributors. Currently there is no cure for acne, but there are many different treatment options (topical and oral medications). Be aware that as with any treatment plan, the acne may actually get worse initially, but you’ll progressively see improvement thereafter. A commonly used form of topical treatment is Benzoyl Peroxide. Overuse of it may cause excessive drying and flaking of the skin, so moisturizing is very important. Keeping Up With Psoriasis

After socialite and Keeping Up with the Kardashians star, Kim Kardashian’s recent announcement that she suffers from psoriasis, it has brought the condition to the attention of many.

Psoriasis is a common skin condition affecting more than 7 million Americans, typically developing between the ages of 15-35. Symptoms of the condition consist of skin redness and irritation with silver colored scales usually found on the knees and elbows. Physicians believe this occurs when the body’s immune system mistakes healthy cells for dangerous or harmful substances.

A common misconception is that psoriasis is contagious, this is not the case. Some things though that can contribute to worsening the condition include, too much exposure to sunlight, consumption of alcohol, and even stress. It can be treated many different ways, with the most common forms used being topical ointments or creams, lotions, and shampoos. With the highly publicized Royal Wedding of Prince William to his longtime girlfriend Catherine Middleton, the couple became the spotlight of the entire world. With an estimated 2 billion people tuning into the nuptials, it was an event of a lifetime. With features in any and every gossip magazine and entertainment show, the couple garnered an unprecedented amount of media attention.

The actual ceremony took place in Westminster Abbey and was quite memorable. From Catherine’s flawless dress to Pippa Middleton’s (Catherine’s sister) impeccable physique, everything about the event was delightfully superb. One thing though that stood out to many for all the wrong reasons, was the ongoing thinning of Prince William’s hair.

Although he is still in the early stages of recession, it is going at quite an accelerated rate for someone his age (he recently just turned 29 in June). He first showed signs of hair loss four years ago, when a picture was taken of him exiting a vehicle. This shocked many because just a few years sooner he was photographed with a thick, luscious head of hair. His hair loss has even caused some to question whether or not it may be negatively influencing his overall appeal.

To the future heir to the throne, this is something he must take into serious consideration because there are various innovative techniques available to combat the seemingly inevitable. Blame It On the Tattoo?

Jamie Foxx is one of the most talented people in the entertainment industry, rising to stardom with his Academy Award winning portrayal of Ray Charles in the 2004 film, Ray. Along with his impressive acting abilities, he is also quite talented musically. In 2009, he had one of the biggest hits of the year with his single, “Blame It” featuring T-Pain. With all his achievements and accolades there is one thing the star has been struggling with, and that is his hairline.

Hairline recession for the star has been a frequent topic throughout his career. His recession was even noticeable going back to his days in the early 90's on the sketch comedy show, In Living Color. Then in 2006, he sported an abnormally low hairline, causing many to question if he had a hair transplant procedure. About a year later, he shaved his head, showing off a new tribal-like tattoo on the back of his scalp. This only furthered speculation of a hair transplant because this is usually where the scar from the procedure typically resides. In an attempt to dispel any rumors, he mentioned on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, that he had the tattoo done in celebration of his 40^th birthday.

The odd thing about Foxx’s alleged transplant procedure is that typically African American men opt for Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) as oppose to Strip Harvesting. This is due to the fact that Strip Harvesting can leave a linear scar in the back of the scalp, and having a closely cut hairstyle would make the appearance of a scar much more prevalent. Some individuals avoid any type of procedure and just choose to shave their head all together. Who could forget the look Michael Jordan made so famous.

What ever the case may be, Foxx is another example that no matter how talented or successful, celebrities still experience the same dilemmas many others do.

The Combover?

Bradley Cooper has been doing quite well since the overwhelming success of The Hangover films, but his hair line on the other hand is another story. The Hangover star seems to be suffering from the early stages of hair loss, and his seemingly fluctuating hair line have led to speculation that he has undergone a hair transplant.

It is done by taking individual hair follicles from the back of the scalp (known as the donor site) and moving them to bald or balding areas. Throughout the years since its inception, the procedure has evolved significantly, but has also developed many misconceptions. Here’s a list to separate some of those misconceptions from the facts:

FICTION: It's easy to tell if someone has had a hair transplant.
FACT: Though in the past this may have been true, with new techniques it's actually quite difficult to notice.

FICTION: Hair transplants are not cost effective.
FACT: When considering the long-term benefits of the procedure, you must understand once you have it done, it's permanent. Having a hair transplant can be cheaper than taking years of medicines in an attempt to keep or re-grow hair.

FICTION: Hair transplants aren't permanent.

Summer Skin Care

With the unofficial beginning of summer next week with the Memorial Day holiday, many people will be spending more time outside over the next few months. As we learned in an earlier post, even if it's not sunny out, harmful UVA rays are still prevalent. Here are just a few important things to keep in mind to help protect your skin this upcoming summer...

When applying sunscreens, layering them does not give added SPF protection. The SPF you end up with is only the SPF of the highest sunscreen you applied. So for example, if you apply a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 then apply one with an SPF of 25, you will only have protection of the SPF of 30.
The American Academy of Dematology does recommend applying two layers of sunscreen on all exposed areas though. The second layer should be applied about 30 minutes after the first, at least 30 minutes before sun exposure.
SPF protection is on a logarithmic scale, meaning there is a bigger difference between SPF 25 and SPF 30 than there is with SPF 30 and SPF 45.
SPF's below 15 are essentially worthless.
If you do contract sunburn take Advil or Motrin, they block inflammation and can actually lessen the burn.

The "ABCDE's" of Melanoma

Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer. Although it is less common than other forms of skin cancer it can spread quite rapidly and develop anywhere on the skin. The disease is caused from overexposure to sun or ultraviolet radiation, especially within people that have fair skin. There are five major signs/symptoms to look for when determining if you may have some form of Melanoma. These are known as the ABCDE's of Melanoma and they include:

A-Asymmetry: Early forms of melanoma are asymmetrical, meaning that you cannot draw a line down the middle and have equal parts on each side.

B-Borders: Uneven borders with irregularities or blurs.

C-Color: Varying shades of brown, blue or black.

D-Diameter (size): Melanoma tend to be larger than normal moles, ones the size of a pencil eraser are something that you should look at closely.

E-Evolving: Any changes in the size, shape, color, or feel.

How to address spider and varicose veins

Men and women alike suffer from spider and varicose veins, which can be a cosmetic nuisance or a symptom of a serious medical condition. Spider and varicose vein treatments are enabling individuals to live happier lives.

Varicose veins are enlarged, gnarled veins that can resemble the twisted roots of a tree. They develop when the one-way valves in veins that carry blood to the heart are faulty. Blood backs up in the veins as a result, and stretches the vein.

Varicose veins are very common and affect half of all Americans ages 50 and older. But they're not just a concern for seniors. Anyone can develop varicose veins, but women are at a greater risk than men.

Varicose veins typically do not have any symptoms, except for the visual presence of deep blue or purple, bulging veins that largely occur on the legs and feet. However, aches in the legs, heavy feeling, itching around veins, or throbbing may also occur. Similar to varicose veins are spider veins, which are smaller and closer to the skin surface.

Pregnancy, age, and stretching of the veins are contributors to varicose veins. Being overweight or standing for long durations of time are other contributors, as is wearing restrictive clothing.

Sclerotherapy is a treatment that has been developed for spider and varicose veins. A solution is injected into a small or medium-sized vein to scar it and close it up. Eventually the vein will shrivel and fade.

In most cases, blood will naturally reroute to other veins in the legs after the procedure. Much of the blood flow in the legs is carried out by deeper veins. Individuals who undergo sclerotherapy can usually walk directly after the treatment. Usually 3-6 treatments are necessary depending on the number of veins.

Feeling good about oneself involves being happy about what is on the inside and outside. Hiding legs and feet due to spider and varicose veins can be embarrassing and uncomfortable, especially as the weather warms. Talk to a dermatologist who performs treatment for spider and varicose veins.
